Review of the 30-30 WIN Saf-T-Trainer Dummy Cartridge

saf-t-trainer dummy cartridges

I made the mistake of buying a bag of 50 of Precision Gun Specialities' dummy cartridges in 30-30 Winchester. The traditional metallic dummy cartridges take a real beating in the tublar magazine lever actions during a safety course and I hoped these solid plastic dummies would be a cheap alternative. I have tried about ten of these in three different lever actions and they have all had difficult extraction. About half of them have had a chunk of the rim pulled off by the extractor on their first use. I got tired of pounding on a cleaning rod to get these things out of the chambers. Spaying them with a lubricant didn't help enough to make them usable.

There are no data stamps on any of these cartridges so they're not very suitable for cartridge identification in a class of novices. The few revolver ones I have in .38 Special work ok, but revolver's are about the gentlest action type. I certainly wouldn't recommend them for any rifle. Immediate action drills on the firing line are likely the best use of these things - you just might get more of a jam than you had anticipated.

If you have any other information on these cartridges, please pass it along to Dave@FirearmsTraining.ca and I'll consider posting it here.
